Richard Berndt studied at the universities of Osnabrück and Göttingen. Following his diploma project on helium-atom scattering at the Max Planck Institute in Göttingen, he moved to the IBM Research Laboratory in Rüschlikon to work on STM-induced light emission under the supervision of J. K. Gimzewski, H. Rohrer and H.-J. Güntherodt. He received his PhD from the University of Basel, worked as a premier assistant with W.-D. Schneider at the University of Lausanne and became an associate professor at RWTH Aachen in 1996. He has been a full professor at the University of Kiel since 1999. Berndt won the Nanoscience Prize and the Joachim Jungius Prize. He has been a visiting scientist at the NIMS in Tsukuba and a visiting professor at the Université Paul Sabatier in Toulouse. He has served as head of the Surface Science Division of the German Physical Society, and sat on the Editorial Board of Physical Review B. He is the author of 313 publications with an ISI H-index of 60. Berndt and his team currently use low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy to investigate quantum transport through molecules, as well as spin effects in molecules and clusters. |
