The International Center for Quantum Design of Functional Materials(ICQD)has been established in Hefei during the Summer of 2008 with strong support from Chinese Academy of Sciences and University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). ICQD is designed to be a cross-divisional research entity within the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale (HFNL). Its mission is to advance the frontiers of materials sciences for quantum information and clean energy, and to promote interactional collaborations in these areas.
ICQD combines the resources and research facilities of the National Laboratory and USTC, eager to forge a strong interdisciplinary research team. Seven internationally well-established scientists have been appointed its guest professors. ICQD plans to extend their influence and expertise. There are altogether 27 outstanding scientists serving as its center members. ICQD aspires to attract more young researchers with rising star statue to join the center in the above areas, and also to introduce highly respected scientists for groundbreaking and visionary research.
The Center emphasizes synergetic research between theory and experiment, strives for discoveries and establishments of new concepts, and aims at scientific achievements that could benefit the humanity. An increasing number of postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students are now joining the center scientists for research and education. Each year, ICQD hosts a wide range of activities including international meetings, lecture and seminar series, extended research residences or sabbatical leaves.
ICQD intends to foster close ties with domestic and foreign counterparts, such as the International Center for Quantum Structure (ICQS) at IOP, CAS, and the International Center for Quantum Materials (ICQM) at Peking University. Meanwhile, it plays a unique bridging role on mutually beneficial collaborations between HFNL and other leading institutions outside China. It also proposes to facilitate joint PhD training programs with overseas universities.
The ultimate goal of the Center is to become China’s flagship institution for fundamental research and education in the broad area of quantum design of functional materials for clean energy and quantum information, with substantial international participation, visibility, and reputation. To fulfill this goal, ICQD will constantly strive to secure sustainable external funding needed for its cherished visions in science and education.
